Chances was separated from her family when Hurricane Katrina hit her home town of New Orleans. She was rescued while cowering beneath the ruins of a house where she was found trembling and scared. Chances was so tired - tired of trying to survive all by herself through the floods, mud, disease, predators and starvation.
Chances had given birth to puppies right around the time of the hurricane. Her puppies did not survive Katrina and Chances endured their devastating loss as well.
Chances was airlifted out of New Orleans by North Shore Animal League America just before Hurricane Rita was to make landfall. She was rescued just in time before she would have had to survive yet another disaster.
When Chances arrived at the League, she was welcomed with open arms. She was groomed, fed, given medical treatment for heartworm and also given loving attention every day. She had been through so much; we wanted to make sure she had the best of everything while at the League.
We also began massive efforts to find her owner. We knew the address of the house we had rescued her from and did a check to find the phone number. Unfortunately, the address and phone number did little good as the owners had evacuated and not returned. We researched through other agencies and websites trying to find any information about the owners of this precious dog.
After several weeks we were finally able to reach Chance’s owners. Unfortunately, they still had no place to stay themselves so we offered to keep Chances for as long as it would take for them to get situated. We also offered to pay for Chances to fly down to them so they could be reunited immediately. They still did not take her back. Last week, after much effort back and forth, the owners called and said they no longer wanted Chances. Chances was again facing heartbreak, so we put her up for adoption immediately so she can find a loving home as soon as possible.
Every day, Chances sits in her bed, and we gently rub her head as she drifts off to sleep. She has been through so much, and you can see it in her eyes that she just wants the chance to give back love to someone who can love her and take care of her.
We hope this holiday season Chances will be given the best gift of all – a second chance at a happy life with a loving new family that can give her the attention and care she needs and deserves.
